While this is a week of turkey, allow me just a few minutes to draw your attention to duck. Lame duck, that is. While the new kids on the block have already arrived at Capitol Hill for their orientation, the 111th Congress has some unfinished business to take care of before saying “adios” in December. The lame duck session, which began Monday, November 15th and is expected to last until mid-December, contains high-profile legislation, some of which has been in the works for over a decade. However, there has been a public push from the Right to refuse passage for any legislation in the session.
Garfield may hate Mondays, but we've learned to love them. To celebrate (and maybe pick your Mondays up), we've asked political cartoonist Neal Obermeyer to whip something up for us every other Monday. Here's his first piece:
Before the Concert for Equality on Saturday, we had a chance to sit down and talk with Omaha originals, Cursive. Lead vocalist and guitar player Tim Kasher and bass player Matt Maginn shared their thoughts on being artists and activists. Then they took the stage in front of a sold out crowd to raise money for the ACLU's lawsuit against Fremont's immigration ordinance.
Sally Ganem refuses to discuss her vote regarding Fremont Ordinance 5165, the infamous immigration ordinance. But Bold can now confirm that the first lady of Nebraska DID cast a ballot during the special election.
According to the Dodge County Clerk, Fred Mytty, Sally did vote in person at her polling precinct.
The final tally from Fremont’s special election for Ordinance 5165 was 3,906 in favor and 2,908 against. On Monday, the infamous immigration ordinance passed.
For 12 hours, Fremont voters cast their ballots at 20 precinct polling locations. Another 476 votes were cast by absentee ballot.
If Heineman-Janssen-Kobach were strong, if they were bold, they would be at the doorsteps of our Nebraska federal delegation and demand they lead on comprehensive immigration reform. Instead, they are telling us what they just helped pass in Fremont is good immigration policy. Just like they told us denying kids access to college is good immigration policy. And just like they told us denying prenatal care to women and babies is good immigration policy.
